**What’s Showing Up This Year:
A Look at School Avoidance, Screens, and Big Feelings**

## Thursday, November 19, 2026 12:00 PM ET | 11:00 AM CT | 9:00 AM PT

![Panelists: Julie Jungman, Vice President, Clinical Care, Cartwheel; Devorah Heitner, Ph.D., author of Screenwise and Growing Up in Public; Drew Rosenshine, Director of Mental Health, Behavior, and SEL, Lowell Public Schools (MA); Moderator Sarah Shoff, Vice President, Customer Success, Cartwheel](https://learn.cartwheelcare.org/hs-fs/hubfs/Webinars/What%20is%20Showing%20Up%20Replay/speakers-grid.png?width=480&height=352&name=speakers-grid.png "Panelists: Julie Jungman, Vice President, Clinical Care, Cartwheel; Devorah Heitner, Ph.D., author of Screenwise and Growing Up in Public; Drew Rosenshine, Director of Mental Health, Behavior, and SEL, Lowell Public Schools (MA); Moderator Sarah Shoff, Vice President, Customer Success, Cartwheel")

Every fall brings its own patterns. This year, districts across the country are describing three things showing up more — students avoiding school, conflict tied to screens and social media, and emotional overwhelm that shows up as outbursts or shutdowns. Each one costs instructional time, and each one tends to hit vulnerable student populations hardest.

Join Julie Jungman, Vice President of Clinical Care at Cartwheel, Devorah Heitner, PhD, author and digital expert, and Drew Rosenshine, Director of Mental Health/SEL and Behavior at Lowell Public Schools (MA), for a look at what’s behind these patterns.

- **School avoidance:** what Lowell saw when it built earlier intervention into its approach including a 61% reduction in suspensions and 34% reduction in chronic absenteeism
- **Screens & social media:** what’s driving the conflict and disengagement districts are reporting, and how families and schools can respond
- **Emotional overwhelm & big behaviors:** what’s behind the rise in outbursts and shutdowns and how earlier support changes the trajectory

This webinar is for district leaders trying to make sense of what’s showing up in their buildings this year and how to respond to it earlier, before it costs more instructional time.

## **What You’ll Learn**

- Hear how three seemingly different classroom patterns trace back to the same underlying student need and what that means for how your district organizes support.
- Understand what’s driving the conflict and disengagement districts are reporting around screens and social media, and how families and schools can respond together.
- What’s behind the rise in outbursts and how earlier support changes a student’s trajectory before a crisis point.
- More about Cartwheel’s new Care Programs, an expanded way to get students and families the right support, sooner

## **Meet the Panelists**

**Julie Jungman, Vice President of Clinical Care, Cartwheel**: Julie leads clinical strategy and care quality across Cartwheel’s programs, bringing more than a decade of behavioral health leadership spanning primary care integration, virtual care delivery, and community mental health — including five years as a therapist inside a middle school. She holds a Master of Social Work from Smith College and is a licensed clinical social worker. In this session, she brings the throughline connecting all three patterns districts are seeing this fall, school avoidance, screen-related conflict, and emotional overwhelm, grounding the conversation in what earlier clinical intervention can change for students before a pattern becomes a crisis.

**Devorah Heitner, Ph.D., Author, *Screenwise* and *Growing Up in Public***: Dr. Heitner holds a Ph.D. in Media, Technology, and Society from Northwestern University and is the author of *Screenwise: Helping Kids Thrive (and Survive) in Their Digital World* and *Growing Up in Public: Coming of Age in a Digital World*. Her work on mentoring kids through their digital lives rather than simply monitoring them has appeared in the New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Wall Street Journal. She’ll bring the research and practical framing behind what’s driving this year’s rise in screen-related conflict in schools.

**Drew Rosenshine, Director of Mental Health, Behavior, and SEL, Lowell Public Schools (MA)**: Drew leads mental health, behavior, and SEL services across Lowell Public Schools, a district of more than 14,000 students located in Massachusetts. Before moving into district-level leadership, he served as a school principal and assistant principal, giving him a ground-level view of how school avoidance shows up for students, families, and staff before it becomes a district-wide pattern. He’ll anchor the school avoidance discussion with Lowell’s own outcome data.

**Sarah Shoff, Vice President, School Success, Cartwheel (Moderator)**: Sarah has spent 15 years working directly with K-12 districts and schools, from building early warning systems and dropout prevention programs to partnering with school communities on data and program adoption. At Cartwheel, she leads School Success, working closely with district leaders to launch programs and translate them into outcomes for students, families, staff and the broader school community.
